Visible things point to invisible things. The visible behaviors of your life point to the invisible desires of your heart. The visible actions of your lifestyle point to the invisible affections of your heart. The way you spend your money, the way you manage your wealth and the way you care for your physical possessions are all like visible plants that point to invisible desires. Visible things point to invisible things.

In Matthew 6:19 – 24 Jesus says…

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Over the last few weeks we learned that:

  1. Your treasure is what you fix your eye upon and what your eye is fixed upon becomes your master. 19-24
  2. If you treasure earthly things then you treasure rotten things and rotten things make you sick. 19
  3. If you store up treasure in Heaven then you are investing in living things instead of rotten things. 20

The question is: What do you treasure? Do you treasure money or do you treasure Christ?

In verse 21 Jesus tells us that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The heart is like a garden that is full of soil and roots and plants. Plants prove what kind of soil they are growing in. Plants prove what kinds of seeds have been planted. Plants prove what kind of roots are developing. The plant is the first thing we see.

If you desire the things of God then it will show in the way you manage your wealth. If Christ has captured the affections of your heart then it will show in how you care for your physical possessions. If Heaven is what you want then it will show in how you spend your money. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Visible things point to invisible things.

Your treasure is what you fix your eye upon and what your eye is fixed upon will become your master. If you treasure earthly things then you treasure rotten things and rotten things make you sick. If you are storing up treasure in heaven then you are investing in living things instead of rotten things. Your visible behavior points to invisible desires.

Every one of us will struggle with invisible, sinful desires. But the good news is that Christ came to set us free from our sinful affections. Jesus is the master that brings life from death. He is our healer. When you trust him for salvation you become his treasure and he becomes your treasure and then your sickness is healed. When you treasure Christ your visible life changes. So the question is: What do you treasure? Do you treasure money or do you treasure Christ?
